What are the different liposuction techniques?
The basics of liposuction are all the same: a vacuum suction is used to remove fat. However, there are several techniques. In “tumescent liposuction,” a medicated solution made of a local anesthetic, salt water and a drug that contracts your blood vessels will be injected into the areas of unwanted fat. This solution:
- Helps the fat to be removed more easily
- Reduces blood loss
- Minimizes bruising after surgery
- Provides anesthesia during and after the surgery
Another technique, “ultrasound-assisted liposuction” also known as UAL, uses an instrument called a cannula. This cannula provides ultrasonic energy, causing the unwanted fat in your fat cells to liquefy. Your fat is then removed via suction. UAL minimizes trauma, which causes less bruising and provides a smoother, more efficient procedure.
What are the risks and potential complications of liposuction?
Like any surgery, the risks include:
- Anesthesia complications
- Pain and swelling
- Infection
- Bleeding
Overall, liposuction is a safe procedure with few potential complications. When performed by a qualified cosmetic surgery like Orlando plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Joseph, you can expect an effective treatment to eliminate areas of stubborn fat and enjoy increased self-confidence.
