What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure to give women fuller breasts through the insertion of implants. This procedure is also used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

What types of Breast Implants are available?

Both saline and silicone gel implants are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for women age 22 and older. Both types of implants use silicone shells that are either pre-filled with silicone gel or filled with a sterile saline solution after the empty shells are inserted into the patient’s chest area.

Are silicone implants safe?

Yes, when performed by an experienced cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Brian Joseph. In 2006 the FDA lifted its 14-year ban on silicone implants after extensive research showed no connection between the claims of serious diseases and silicone implants.

Where will the surgeon make the incisions to insert the implants?

Dr. Joseph will take into consideration a number of factors when deciding where to place the incisions for breast implant insertion, including:

  • The implant type and size
  • The patient’s body type
  • The patient’s lifestyle and preference

Implant incisions can be located in four areas:

  • Crease below the breasts
  • Areola
  • Armpit
  • Navel

How long are the incisions?

Saline implant incisions are generally smaller because the silicone shells are empty when they are placed in the body and filled with the solution after they are in the body. Pre-filled silicone implants require a slightly larger incision area. The length of incisions generally ranges from 1 to 4 inches. Other factors that play a part in the incision length include:

  • The insertion location
  • The size of the implants
  • The texture of the implants

Are there any risks associated with Breast Implants?

Any invasive surgery has inherent risks, and breast augmentation is not exception. Some of the risks or complications can include:

  • Implant rupture, causing the saline or silicone gel to leak into the body
  • Infection
  • Capsular contracture, which occurs when the scar tissue around the implant begins to contract, squeezing the breast
  • Loss of breast sensitivity
  • Rippling or indentations in the breast
  • Interference with mammogram readings/results
  • General dissatisfaction with the size or appearance of the breasts
