Breast Implants and Pregnancy Risks
Breast implants do not pose any threat to a pregnant woman’s health or the health of her developing fetus. There was once the concern over silicone leakage, but numerous studies have revealed that if a silicone implant ruptures and is absorbed into the body, it will not have negative health effects. A ruptured implant should be removed, so if you suspect your implant is ruptured, be sure to have it checked as soon as you are able.
Breast Implants and Breastfeeding
Breast implants may or may not impact your ability to breast feed. This often depends on the location of your incision. The incision for silicone implants is often created below your breast and underneath your armpit, which will not impact your milk ducts. The incision for saline implants is commonly made on your areola (dark circular area around your nipple), which may damage your milk ducts. If your milk ducts are damaged, you may have decreased milk flow, or you may not be able to produce milk at all.
Sensitivity changes can also make it painful to breast feed, or require manual stimulation to trigger the production of milk. The good news is that when breast implants are placed underneath your muscle, they provide an additional layer of protection between your milk ducts, which can help preserve your ability to breastfeed.
Effects of Pregnancy on Your Implants
If you have implants prior to becoming pregnant, the implants can actually help preserve the shape of your breasts after you give birth. This is because a woman’s breasts enlarge with milk during pregnancy, and then “deflate” after the child is born and breast feeding concludes.
Implants can help maintain the full shape of your breast, though you may want a breast lift to completely restore your pre-pregnancy breast volume.
