Vaser is a new body contouring procedure, advanced form of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. What differs is that this ultrasonic technique bursts and melts fat cells without disturbing the surrounding tissues, creating less trauma, bruising and swelling. This minimal-pain method is so precise that you may need as little as two days of downtime.
How liposculpting works
This procedure is preformed under a general anesthesia with a board-certified anesthesiologist caring for you while you are asleep. Typically there is no overnight stay needed. A tumescent fluid is then placed under the skin. This fluid contains both lidocaine to reduce pain and epinephrine to reduce bleeding. Then using ultrasound waves, Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Joseph will deliver targeted energy to your fat cells with solid, grooved probes. The fat is melted, then suctioned out of your body through a canula through a small, one-centimeter incision. This is where your surgeons experience and expertise of shaping and sculpting the body is most important. Dr. Joseph believes liposuction is as much of an art as it is a science and will tailor it to your needs and desires. These tiny incisions can even be placed through old scars or moles to further minimize the signs of liposuction surgery.
Approved for fat removal by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002, Vaser specifically targets the fatty tissue to be removed, without disrupting other blood cells and tissues that contain collagen. Because this method is more gentle the risk of complications – both incidents and severity – are greatly reduced.
Am I a candidate?
The best candidates for Vaser liposuction are those who are:
- In good shape
- Within 15 pounds of their ideal body weight
- Have isolated problem areas of fat
- Have realistic expectations
One good way to determine whether this procedure is right for you is to study liposuction before and after photos. By matching previous before and after patient pictures with your body type you can get a fairly good idea of what to expect without any unrealistic expectations.

Following this revolutionary procedure, both doctors and patients have reported that Vaser liposuction also works to tighten up the excess skin above your fat deposit – more so than with traditional liposuction. You should anticipate at least two days of downtime with minimal pain. Soreness after the procedure can last for three to five days, comparable to the soreness of hard workout. You will still need to wear a pressure garment for about six weeks following surgery to ensure that your skin tightens well; also to prevent sagging and rippling. Your fat cells will be permanently removed. However, by making the commitment to have liposuction performed, you are also making a long-term pledge to maintain a stable weight and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
