Lip Augmentation

Full, pouty lips are considered a symbol of youth and sensuality. With modern cosmetic surgery, it is possible to aesthetically shed years off your life. To create plump, luscious lips, one option is lip augmentation surgery. To alter the size of your lips, Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Joseph can either inject your lips, or surgically implant materials inside of them. Some procedures are temporary, others are permanent. You can have just one lip treated—upper or lower—or have both enlarged at the same time.
Injections done in the office ( usually given with a “dental block” to numb the lips)

• Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus – Composed of hyaluronic acid similar to that found in the body

• Radiesse – Composed of calcium microspheres suspended in a water-based gel similar to that found in the body and stimulates the body to create new collagen

• Restylane – Composed of hyaluronic acid

• Parlane Composed of  hyaluronic acid

• Collagen injections – Are prepared from the collagen found in cow skin, and used temporarily to augment the lips. Injected into the lips with small needles, this can also cause an allergic reaction.

• Fat injections – Are harvested from another area of the body (often the abdomen or thighs) and is purified before it is injected into the lips. Results are often temporary, but longer than collagen injections. These carry the risk of lumping or scarring.

• Artefill injections – Composed of synthetic beads, Artefill stays in the lips and raises them.

• Autologen injections – Collagen is extracted from your own skin, often from excess skin removed in a facelift.

• Dermalogen injections – This is extracted from the skin of a cadaver. The effects are temporary, and are similar to the effects of collagen injections.

• Fascia injections – Fascia (white connective tissue) is also extracted from a cadaver.   

Surgical options:

• Alloderm – This is a sheet of collagen created from deceased humans. Dr. Joseph will insert them through tiny incisions made on the inside part of the lip. This material will give you full lips for up to 12 months.

• Fat grafting – With this method, Dr. Joseph will insert your own fat into your lips for a more permanent fix. There is also a risk of your body absorbing the fat, so the results may vary.

• Synthetic materials – Gore-Tex, SoftForm and soft ePTFE are a few synthetic materials that can achieve a permanent result without the chance of your body absorbing them, like with fat grafting. With this method, there is a risk of allergic reaction.

• Local flap grafts – This procedure takes tissue and skin from the inside flap of your mouth to fatten your lips. It's the most invasive technique, and is often the last resort.
