Safety Issues Related to Saline and Silicone Implants

Dr. Brian Joseph and the staff at Park Avenue Plastic Surgery stand behind the conviction that breast augmentation surgery is one of the safest surgical cosmetic procedures a person can undergo. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tested and studied both saline and silicone implants and found both to be "safe and effective" in breast enlargement or reconstruction procedures.

Some women may be under the impression that saline implants are safer than silicone. The truth is that both are very safe options; however, silicone implants may require more monitoring to ensure that a “silent rupture” has not occurred.

  • When saline implants leak, the effects are generally immediate, with the implant deflating as the saline is safely absorbed into the body.
  • The thicker, sticky gel that is found in silicone implants will not absorb into the body in the event of a rupture. In fact, there may be no outward signs of the rupture, or the patient may experience other symptoms such as breast distortion, pain or lumps. Untreated, the leaked gel can result in the development of scar tissue, pain or deformity.

Regular MRI exams (every two years) on silicone implant patients can help identify any signs of implant leakage.

Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation has its own set of risks and complications. By remaining in tune with your body and aware of any inconsistencies, problems can be identified and treated early.

Risks vs. Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

If you crave a flat, toned abdomen but are unable to achieve the look you desire despite living a healthy, active lifestyle, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty procedure may do the trick. The benefits of a tummy tuck are fairly obvious; however, there are potential risks that may not be as obvious for people considering this type of cosmetic surgery.

Benefits

  • Elimination of excess abdominal fat and skin
  • Tightened abdominal muscles
  • Creation of a smaller waistline
  • Removal or tightening of stretch-marked skin
  • Improved body image and self-confidence
  • Removal of potentially dangerous belly fat

Complications

  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Dissatisfaction with the inevitable surgery scar along the bikini line
  • Delayed healing process
  • Infections during or after surgery

Although tummy tucks are serious surgical procedures, they are generally safe if performed by a well-trained, knowledgeable cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Brian Joseph. It is also important that the patient follow all of the doctor's orders and recommendations before, during and after the procedure to reduce possible risks.

Please contact our Florida plastic surgery office today for a free tummy tuck risks and benefits consultation. We will help you determine if you are a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery.

Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?

Because there are so many different cosmetic surgery options today, sometimes it is difficult for potential patients to determine which procedure is the right one. While it is great to be able to access information easily on the Internet regarding different types of procedures, this is no substitute for a one-on-one consultation with a trained, qualified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Brian Joseph.

One of the decisions Dr. Joseph helps his patients make is whether a tummy tuck or liposuction can help them create the contoured, sculpted abdominal area they desire. In general, if a person has good overall health but cannot get rid of excess fat and skin in the abdominal area in spite of diet and exercise, a tummy tuck may be warranted. If the person has excess fat, but not excess skin, liposuction may be the answer.

In some cases liposuction is implemented along with a tummy tuck to achieve the greatest amount of fat removal.

These two procedures remain in the top 5 cosmetic surgeries, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In fact, in 2008 there were:
  • 245,138 liposuction procedures
  • 121,653 tummy tuck procedures

If you are a healthy individual who would like to eliminate unwanted fat and/or skin in the abdominal area, please contact our Florida cosmetic surgery office today for a tummy tuck or liposuction consultation.

Latisse At Park Avenue Plastic Surgery

We are excited about carrying Latisse at Park Avenue Plastic Surgery. Here is some important information regarding Latisse. Latisse is approved by the FDA to grow eyelashes.

What is Latisse? Latisse solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis (inadequate or not enough eyelashes), making them longer thicker, and darker.

How does it work? It works by prolonging the active growth phase of hair.

How soon will I see results? The onset is gradual. Most people see improvements by 2 months.

Can anyone use Latisse?

You should not use Latisse if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Latisse. Also, if you have eye pressure problems (elevated intraocular pressure) you should speak to an eye care specialist before starting Latisse.

If you are currently taking medication for eye pressure problems or have a risk for glaucoma you should speak to an eye specialist before using Latisse.

Are there any side effects of Latisse? The most common side effects after using Latisse are eye itching or eye redness. This was seen in about 4% of patients in the clinical trials. Another side effect which may be seen is darkening of the skin around the eye where Latisse is applied.

If you are interested in learning more about Latisse, please call my office or come in for a complimentary consult.

Tummy Tuck Candidacy

If you are tired of spending hours at the gym, performing hundreds of crunches and trying to stay true to your diet and you still have an unsatisfactory abdominal area, a tummy tuck may be the perfect answer. Also called abdominoplasty, this procedure can help to fill in where diets and exercise fail. Tummy tucks have helped hundreds of thousands of men and women contour their abdomens into a flatter, smoother contour.

So how do you know if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck procedure? When assessing potential patients, Florida cosmetic surgeon Dr. Brian Joseph will look for people who lead healthy lifestyles and have a good medical history. Certain individuals are especially good candidates, including:

  • Women who have been pregnant and have delivered babies either vaginally or via Cesarean section. Multiple pregnancies can have a greater effect on a woman’s abdominal elasticity and muscle tone. (This surgery is not recommended for women to plan to become pregnant again.)
  • Men and women who have lost major amounts of weight, either through diet and exercise or by a specific type of gastric surgery. (It is not recommended for people who plan to lose a lot of weight in the future.)

Tummy tucks are not for people who think this is a quick method to lose weight. Likewise, getting a tummy tuck will not magically make a person more attractive or more popular, although self-confidence is often increased as a result of the procedure.

If you live in the Orlando, Florida area and would like to discover if a tummy tuck is right for you, please contact our office today to request a tummy tuck consultation.

Tummy Tuck

At Park Avenue Plastic Surgery, we understand that it can be frustrating for healthy men and women to be plagued with a less-than-satisfactory abdominal area. Sometimes even rigorous exercise and healthy diets are not enough to fully flatten the stomach, especially after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

An abdominoplasty or tummy tuck procedure can help to remove excess abdominal skin and fat to create a beautifully smooth, toned midsection. There are different types of tummy tucks that can be performed:

  • Traditional full tummy tuck
  • Mini tummy tuck
  • Circumferential tummy tuck
  • Modified tummy tuck

Each patient will be suited for a specific tummy tuck technique, depending on:

  • The amount of fat to be removed
  • The amount of skin to be removed
  • The location of the excess skin and fat
  • How much stomach muscle tightening is required

A flat abdomen is not only aesthetically pleasing; it can also protect you from potential health risks associated with excess belly fat. However, tummy tucks are not meant to be a substitution for healthy lifestyles, and this is not a weight loss solution.

If you would like to learn if you are a candidate for a tummy tuck procedure, please complete our “contact us” page to request a free abdominoplasty consultation. Dr. Brian Joseph serves patients in the Orlando and Winter Park areas of Florida.
